High stakes for the best snoozin branch

One of the most spectacular sights to see is the aurora borealis blazing across the night sky.

What an epic sighting..this is definitely a career highlight for me..I'm heading back to China in April for a 14 photo expedition and can't wait to see what exceptional wildlife we find.

The Northern Lights are calling. I've been playing around with some new equipment and looking forward to taking some new photography principles I've been studying and applying them to some northern lights photography. Landscape photography where the sky is always changing! My first of four expeditions to Churchill, Manitoba starts in just about three weeks.

As the sun set over the frozen tundra, these two polar bears went for a quick tussle. Polar bear fur is translucent and reflects the atmospheric light. When the sun is setting and the oranges, reds, and yellows begin to shine across the landscape, the bears turn the same colour.

Thank you everyone for your support as I get closer and closer to publishing Wild Bears of Canada. Last night I was up until 2am finalizing the book and it will shortly be going to print.

I've had a 10.5mm fisheye for a few years and love the effect it makes when shooting straight up. 180 degree field of view from corner to corner. Pointed straight up to the sky and through the trees it captures everything in sight in all directions including this spectacular northern lights show.

Peaking through the grass and trying to sneak a glance at 2025

The northern treeline looks like this. Long, extremely cold winters and short warm summers help dictate the regions where trees can persist and the bitter northwest winds bombard the upwind side of the trees with brutally low temperatures and ice crystals. Branches shy away from the constant icy assault which leads to the distinctive "flag-trees" pictured.

This bear was standing around 9 feet tall when I took this picture. Ever see a wild bear standing on its hind legs? Ever see a taxidermied bear standing on its hind legs, claws outstretched, and mouth wide open with their canines polished and on display? Or perhaps a drawing or cartoon?

I always try to find new ways of capturing the northern lights. It's never quite the same in the sky, and it's always a fun challenge to try and find new foregrounds, compositions, and shooting styles. I'm looking forward to my upcoming 2025 expeditions to Churchill, Manitoba and finding some new perspectives.

While writing my book Wild Bears of Canada, I've really enjoyed exploring my photography catalogue and revisiting some bear encounters from the last decade. I'll never tire of watching bears and how they interact with their environment, and other bears. Each individual is shaped by their lifetime of experiences.

Getting a low perspective and shooting up through the trees is one my favorite ways to photograph the aurora borealis

Hudson Bay has been having some unseasonal sea ice patterns this year and some bears in the Southern Hudson Bay may not be on the sea ice yet. According to @polarbearsinternational this means some polar bears have not been on sea ice for over 197 days - pushing many polar bears ability to ward off starvation.

Never ceases to amaze me..I've probably watched the aurora several hundreds of nights and it's never the same. Always brilliant.

When I had this camera I needed to take hundreds of photos and put them together in video photoshop. It was a heavy task for my poor old computer

The aurora borealis, a powerful space weather phenomenon, is best observed on clear and cold nights with little light pollution. Situating yourself under the aurora oval also exponentially increases your odds of spectacular northern lights
